Camera Cameos: Exakta VX on Rear Window

Camera: Exakta VX
Cameo-ed on: Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window

The lead character on this film, James Stewart, is a magazine photographer, confined to his wheelchair, who uses his camera and its long wide-angle/telephoto lens to spy on his neighbors through his apartment window.

Notice that on the film, the camera’s brand name was deliberately covered in black tape but by the looks of it, it is undeniably an Exakta VX. Here’s an ad from 1954 which commercializes the use of the mentioned camera in Rear Window.

Exakta cameras were made in Dresden, Germany by a company named Ihagee Kamerawerk. Here’s a closer, more detailed look at our camera on spotlight:

* Camera Cameos is one of my original series on film photography which features different film cameras that appeared in different forms of visual media. This particular article was initially published on Lomography Magazine.
